Choosing the most suitable LCD TV Wall Mount

By

An LCD hung on the wall looks great, but in addition to this it is also good from a security and safety point of view. A LCD TV wall mount puts your TV out of harms way, so if you have inquisitive members in your household it may be a good move.

LCD TV wall mounts are available in a number of different formats and if you are after a specific LCD TV wall mount the likelihood is that you will be able to get it, as a general guide they fit in to these groups:

  • Ultra Slim TV Brackets
  • Swivel Arm TV Brackets
  • Tilting TV Brackets
  • Tilt and Turn TV Brackets
  • Cantilever TV Brackets
  • Corner TV Brackets
  • Ceiling TV Brackets
  • Electric TV brackets

Lets take a look at these different types and when you might use them:

Ultra Slim TV Brackets

The ultra slim bracket does not mean that it’s for the new variety of ultra slim technology LCD TV, it means that the bracket it ultra slim i.e. the distance between the back of your TV and the wall is kept to a minimum. You may ask what’s the point, I only see my TV head on, but if you were mounting your TV on a wall that you walked along and hence you would see the side of the TV it would look much better to have a slim variant.

Swivel Arm / Cantilever / Corner TV Brackets

All of these are essentially of the same design and therefore can be lumped together. If none of the rooms in your house are square you may think that you wouldn’t be able to put your TV on the wall. To me it would be annoying not sit square on to a TV, but this is where swivel arm brackets are ideal. You can mount your TV on any wall and make sure that you are sitting square on to it.

Tilting TV Brackets

These are very useful if you need to put you TV above a fireplace for example, to get the best contrast you need to be looking at your TV square on. If when you’re sat on your sofa your eye height is at 1m ( about 3’) but the centre of your TV is 1.5m (about 5’) then and the TV is flat on the wall then you are not going to be seeing the best picture quality. If you’re bracket has a slight tilt on it though you can angle your tv down so that you are viewing it squarely.

Tilt and Turn TV brackets.

You guessed it! A combination of swiveling and titlting TV brackets – great for all the reasons and situations I described above.

Ceiling TV Brackets

If the walls in your house do not lend themselves to having a large amount of weight hung of them then a ceiling bracket may be the answer… you must have joists, right? The bracket fixes to the ceiling and an arm extends down that has  a plate on it to which your TV is attached. The arms that extend down from the ceiling are adjustable so you can set the height of the TV. If this isn't an options for you then you'll be wanting to get and LCD TV Stand

Electric TV Brackets

Perhaps you’ve got multiple seating positions in your lounge, an electric TV bracket may be the answer. This sort of TV bracket comes with a remote control so that you can adjust the angle of the TV to where you are sitting. Great!

VESA Standards

You may have heard of VESA, this is a universal standard for the dimensions of the fixing points on the back of your TV. The standard dimensions for this are:

  • 75mm x 75mm
  • 100mm x 100mm
  • 200mm x 200mm
  • 200mm x 100mm
  • 400mm x 200mm
  • 800mm x 400mm

As an example a 32 lcd tv wall mount will probable use a 200mm x 100mm fixing plate. The dimensions are usually relative to the size of your TV. Many but not all TVs fixing points are made to this standard. If yours is not do not worry, you can get adapter plates that mean that you can use a wide range of wall mounts for your TV.

Regardless of the size of your TV you will be able to get one of the above for it. The brackets are generally made from heavy duty powder coated steel and can easily take the weight of your monster 65” LCD TV. If anything is going to fail it will be the fixings that you use to attach it to the wall so make sure that you use fixings suitable for the material of your walls or ceilings.
